This is the shaped Rock Oil box on its test switch-on. It sits on a bench, wired up temporarily, and this is the moment that decides whether it goes to site or back into the workshop.
We are checking one thing: whether you can see where the LEDs sit inside. On a green field with white letters, any unevenness shows immediately — bright bands along the strips and dark corners. The fix is some combination of strip spacing, box depth and diffuser, and there is no way to get it right by eye without switching the thing on.
The shaped outline adds work. Light is easy to distribute in a rectangle; here there is a sharp corner on the left and a narrow neck between the two parts of the mark, which is exactly where the LEDs tend not to reach. In the workshop that takes a second to spot and a few minutes to fix. Six metres up a facade, nobody is taking the box apart again.
