Illuminated or Non-Illuminated Sign: Which to Choose for Your Facade?

The short answer: it depends on when your customers see you. If most of your trade is in the evening and after dark, go illuminated. By day, a clean non-illuminated sign is often enough, and simpler to make.

Choosing between an illuminated and a non-illuminated sign isn't a question of better or worse. It's about your spot and your hours. An illuminated sign reads by day and after sunset thanks to its LEDs. A non-illuminated one works through shape, contrast and material, so in the evening it's only as visible as the street lighting around it.

So we look at the specifics: how late you're open, how well-lit your street is, and what your facade is like. Below is an honest comparison on visibility, power use, upkeep, fit and permits, with no sales pitch for either side.

Guides

Illuminated signs: when light pays off

An illuminated sign has LEDs inside: face-lit, halo (back-lit) or a solid lightbox. The point is for the lettering to read after dark, when much of the trade happens.

  • Visibility: works day and night. You're seen across the street even with no street lamps.
  • Fit: cafes, bars, pharmacies, shops open into the evening, a sign in a courtyard or up high. Anything that has to "live" after sunset.
  • Build and upkeep: more parts to it (LEDs, power supply, electrical work), and it needs electronics servicing down the line.

Neon and lightboxes give their own kind of light. Those are separate TheFace services with their own pages.

Non-illuminated signs: when you don't need light

A non-illuminated sign reads through relief, contrast and material: milled metal, acrylic or PVC, flat or dimensional. With no LEDs or power supply, it's a simpler build.

  • Visibility: crisp by day; in the evening it's seen only as far as your street or window is lit.
  • Fit: a daytime office, boutique, showroom, workshop or craft coffee shop. Places with daytime footfall or a quiet, understated look.
  • Upkeep: almost nothing to maintain, with no electronics to fail.

If you want lighting later, the build can often be set up so it's added then.

How to choose for your facade

You don't have to decide up front. At the free on-site survey we look at your facade, the street lighting, your hours and the angle the sign reads from, then tell you where light is genuinely needed and where a non-illuminated sign will do.

TheFace makes both types turnkey: design, manufacturing in metal, acrylic or PVC, installation by our own crew with 10+ years of experience, and a one-year warranty with service afterwards. The visit, survey and quote are free. The 3D visualization on a photo of your facade, day and night, comes once you confirm the order, so you see how the sign will glow before anything is built.

Q&A

Frequently asked questions

Which sign is simpler to make — illuminated or non-illuminated?

A non-illuminated sign is usually the simpler build: no LED modules, no power supply, no electrical work, and an easier body to make. But if you need to be seen in the evening, a plain non-illuminated sign can cost you customers, and that's when light earns its place. We'll advise what fits your facade at the free survey, with a quote.

Can I start with a non-illuminated sign and add lighting later?

Often, yes. If you're planning light for the future, we leave space for LEDs in the build from the start, so it's easier to add on later. For full illumination there are also dedicated options: neon signs and lightboxes.

How much electricity does an illuminated sign use?

LED is efficient and runs on low voltage, so consumption stays low even with daily evening use. We calculate the exact power for your size and lighting type together with the quote for the sign.

How do I tell which type I actually need?

We look at your hours and your street. Open into the evening or on a dark street, go illuminated. A daytime office, boutique or showroom with good daylight, and non-illuminated is often enough. We'll advise at the free survey and show the look in 3D once you confirm the order.
