What to make a sign from: acrylic, metal, PVC or composite?
There's no single answer: the material depends on what you're making — a flat panel or dimensional letters, for outdoors or indoors. In short, PVC and composite go into panels and backers, while acrylic and metal go into letters, logos and the face of the sign.
A sign's material decides three things: how long it survives outdoors, how it reads up close and how much it weighs on your wall. There's no single "best" material, only the right one for the job.
The four materials fall into two groups. PVC and composite are sheets for flat panels, backers and solid fields behind a name and logo. Acrylic and metal go into dimensional letters, logos and a lit face. Often a sign is a combination: a composite panel as the background with acrylic or metal letters on top.
Acrylic: light, gloss and a clean face
Acrylic is a smooth, glossy plastic with clean edges. It comes clear or coloured and passes and diffuses light well, so it goes into lightbox faces, illuminated 3D letters, acrylites and logos that need to glow evenly.
The trade-off: acrylic scratches more easily than metal, and over many years, or from an impact, it turns more brittle. So it's kept away from abrasives and hard knocks.

Metal: the toughest and the most premium-looking
Metal means steel or aluminium in a brushed, painted or patinated finish. It's the toughest of the four and the most solid-looking, so it goes into facade letters, prestige logos and the load-bearing frames of stelae and rooftop signs.
What you give up: metal is the heaviest, so it needs solid mounting, and steel has to be coated against corrosion — aluminium resists it on its own. Fabrication is also more involved than with plastic.

PVC: the lightest and simplest, though not for years in the sun
Foamed PVC is a light, matte sheet. It goes into flat signs under vinyl or print, backers and indoor plaques — wherever simplicity and low weight matter.
The catch: outdoors, PVC lasts less than the others. Large sheets can warp in sun and heat, and applied vinyl fades over time. So for long outdoor fields we more often suggest composite, and keep PVC for interiors, backers and shorter service.

Composite (ACP): the flat field for large facades
Aluminium composite is two thin aluminium skins over a plastic core. The result is a flat, painted panel that holds its plane, doesn't warp in the sun and stands on a facade for years, while staying light for its rigidity.
Composite goes into large facade panels, a solid field behind a name and logo, and cladding for stelae and pylons. One limitation: it's a sheet material, so on its own it doesn't glow or form dimensional letters; it usually works as the base, with letters mounted on top.

In short: for a flat panel or backer, choose between PVC (lighter, for interiors and shorter service) and composite (for outdoors and large fields); for dimensional letters, a logo or a lit face, choose between acrylic (light, gloss, colour) and metal (durability and prestige). The best result is often a combination: a composite background with acrylic or metal letters on top.
