How tall do your sign letters need to be?
For a name to be legible at all from 30 metres, a capital letter has to be at least 10 cm tall; for it to read confidently at a glance, about 25 cm. Those are the metric versions of two industry rules: the International Sign Association’s minimum of one inch of letter height per 25 feet of distance is exactly 1 cm per 3 m, and the widely published “one inch per 10 feet” is 1 cm per 1.2 m.
Cap height is the one parameter of a sign that nothing else can compensate for. Brighter illumination, a better typeface and a more expensive material will not make a name legible if the letter is too small for the distance people read it from.
The calculator returns both numbers (the limit of legibility and the height we actually design to), plus the width of the line, so you can see at once whether the name fits the facade.

Where these numbers come from
Ukraine has no national standard for sign letter height, so we are not going to invent one. We take two industry references and convert them to metric:
- the International Sign Association puts the minimum at one inch of letter height per 25 feet of distance — exactly 1 cm per 3 m
- the rule of thumb published across the trade, one inch per 10 feet, gives 1 cm per 1.2 m — and that is what we design to
Sources disagree on what to call the second figure: some treat it as the maximum readable distance, others as comfortable reading. We leave the disagreement visible. The first number is the floor below which there is nothing left to argue about; the second is what we build to, and it matches what we see on facades.
Why traffic gets different numbers
A pedestrian can stop, look closer and finish reading. A driver has a few seconds and is also watching the road — there is no “look closer” available.
So for traffic the recommended height becomes the floor. That is our rule rather than a standard: it comes out of the same two ratios and out of how signs along a street actually read from a moving car.
What a real facade changes
The table describes ideal conditions: a clean face, good contrast, a roughly frontal view. Reality is usually worse, and each of the factors below eats into the margin:
- weak contrast between the lettering and its background — the most common reason a “big sign” still does not read
- a sharp viewing angle along the street, which visually compresses the letters
- thin or condensed weights, and small caps with wide gaps
- a dirty or sun-bleached face, or a failed illumination module
- an unlit sign on a dark facade in the evening, which simply disappears
So when your distance sits near the limit, take the next size up.
Line width — and whether the name fits
The line width is estimated from average grotesque proportions: a capital about 0.62 of the cap height wide, a word space 0.3, and letter spacing 0.12 per gap. It is an estimate: the real figures belong to the actual typeface, and we measure them exactly on the layout.
Enter the facade width and the calculator shows what share of it the line takes. When the line does not fit there are usually three ways out: a shorter name, two lines, or a smaller height with a closer working distance.
How we verify it before manufacturing
The numbers are a starting point. On the free site visit we measure the facade and the distances the sign is actually seen from, then lay the design over a photograph of your building.
The photomontage settles the argument about height: it shows immediately whether the name gets lost or overwhelms the facade. Only then do we build, to the agreed dimensions.
